Lionel 671-248 Flanged Axle Bushing - The 671-248 flanged axle bushing first appeared in the 1952 versions of the Lionel 681 which had been renumbered to 671RR due to the Korean War and the lack of magnet materials that would have been used for Magnetraction. With the advent of Magnetraction, Lionel needed to add a flange to the bushing to extend its face beyond the side plate used to enable Magnetraction to work properly. However, without available magnets, Lionel needed to bridge the gap between narrower 681 frame and the back of the wheels since the magnet plates would not be needed. The 671-248 axle bushing is made of Oilite bearing material unlike the reproductions, which are made of turned brass. Oilite is compressed granular bronze that has been impregnated with oil. Do not use any type of grease with these bushings as grease will clog the pores of the bronze. Use mineral oil only!
