Molybdenum Disulfide - Black Paste Lubricant 3 Grams - Molybdenum Disulfide - Although this lubricant has been used for years by automotive racing engine builders during the assembly process ; and it is even used during maintenance of jet engines, it is ideal for toy trains. Why? Simple, most toy train greases, especially those made for Lionel in the early years, were comprised of small amounts of lubricant suspended in wax with a petroleum distillate carrier that allows the grease to flow. The only problem is that the petroleum distillate evaporates and the small amount of lubricant dissipates leaving behind a hard wax like mess.   While this black paste lubricant is also suspended in a distillate, that distillate is pure mineral oil, and when it dissipates the Molybdenum Disulfide maintains its lubricating properties.

This lubricant works so well that you apply it with a tooth pick or tiny artist paint brush. No need to smear it on. Remember the commercial years ago, a little dab will do? That’s the case here.

Molybdenum disulfide is an inorganic compound with the formula of MoS2. This is a black crystalline sulfide of molybdenum and occurs as the mineral molybdenite. It is the principal ore from which molybdenum metal is extracted. MoS2 is relatively unreactive, being unaffected by dilute acids and oxygen. In its appearance and feel, molybdenum disulfide is similar to graphite. Indeed, like graphite, it is widely used as a solid lubricant because of its low friction properties and robustness. Molybdenum disulfide, like graphite, has a low friction coefficient, but unlike graphite, it does not rely on adsorbed vapors or moisture. In fact, adsorbed vapors may actually result in a slight, but insignificant, increase in friction.
